Principal and Founder
I first cut my teeth working retail at Sport Chalet and specialty outdoor retailer Adventure 16 while attending college at San Diego State University. My retail sales experience grew into a guiding and buying role at Adventure 16 where I managed OTB and sales performance for a diverse range of categories.
I moved into the brand side of the table when I became National Sales Manager for Sierra Designs from 1991 to 1993 where I managed an established sales team. While Sierra Designs was best known for their heritage products, they quickly became a leader in Tents and Sleeping Bags during my years there.
In 1993, I left Sierra Designs to co-found Mountain Hardwear, a high end outdoor apparel and equipment brand, where I primarily drove their distribution strategy, sales structure, and product positioning that helped build revenue to over $35 million before merging with Columbia Sportswear in 2003. I remained at Mountain Hardwear after the acquisition as VP Sales and Marketing for 2 years and then President of Mountain Hardwear and Montrail for 4+ years. I worked to guide their rapid expansion into global markets, new product categories, brand marketing, and direct retail that grew sales to over $100 million globally by 2009.
In 2009, I stepped away from Mountain Hardwear to work for private equity partners (VMG and Portfolio Logic) to turn around Timbuk2 Designs as its CEO. This required a fresh team, new channel and product strategies, and revitalized leadership that delivered greater than 50% growth over a 3 year period. Timbuk2 gave me hands on experience in eCommerce, direct retail expansion, mass customization, and corporate sales along with channel experience in Bike, Consumer Electronics, Mass, and Dept Stores.
